The BBC has confirmed earlier reports that Doctor Who co-star Jenna Coleman is, in fact, leaving the series. According to a blog post on the show’s official website, “Series 9 sees the Impossible Girl’s departure although the how, why and when are all questions we’ll have to watch the new adventures to find out.”
With the ninth series, Coleman’s Clara Oswald becomes the longest serving companion since the show was revived in 2005. She stared as the character for two-and-a-half series, the fiftieth anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, and as precursor versions of Clara in the 2012 Christmas special, The Snowmen, and the series 7 premiere, Asylum of the Daleks.
As series ten is in the hazy future, it’s far too early to speculate on her replacement — or, indeed, any details about the next series — but feel free to think of creative ways in which she might depart.
And just to throw this out there: only three companions in the show’s entire history have died on-screen.
